PROBLEM & SOLUTION FOR WEARABLE DEVICES
Wearable devices are popular in the consumer market following the wave of smart watches and self- quantify wristbands. However multiple SMEs expressed a need for high quality data hardware so that they can develop their applications in the medical monitoring domain. 4 different SMEs wanted to set up a miniaturised monitoring tool that could deliver reliable inputs in the healthcare market. They wanted to assess a wrist worn system capable to monitor the activity, the heart rate, the skin temperature and the blood oxygenation level with a data quality that could be considered as “medical grade”. These systems can permit multiple applications including stress monitoring, and represent the next generation of self-quantify tools.

HOW DID GATEONE HELP THE WEARABLE MONITORING DEVICE TECHNOLOGY?
Thanks to the Gateone-project these SMEs have been able to start a collaboration with LETI, giving access to this Competence Center with a minimum risk of investment. LETI delivered competencies in system integration, but also knowledge in the requirements of medical device compliance, they are now able to measure the four required datas simultaneously with a medical grade performance and autonomy.
This self-quantify patch is also designed so that new application such as stress monitoring can be embedded and can be further integrated with Skin Galvanic Response sensors. Other form factors can be also considered. The wrist worn device is the most popular self-quantify device. However, the integration in a helmet, a t-shirt is also possible. Thanks to the Gateone-project, the desired level of integration and performance has been reached and to date, this platform is used by 4 different SMEs with specific use cases and customisation. Each of these companies targets a turnover ramping from 130k€ to 1,5M€ in 3 years. This potentially could lead to a 4 to 6M€ value generation in 2020.
